Robert Sr.

I bought Robert (he was just Robert at this point, of course) off of eBay. Robert arrived the same day my grandfather, who was also named Robert, died. My grandfather was named first, having been born almost seventy years earlier, if that gives you a clue as to how I picked Robert's name.

Due to Robert Sr.'s being a laptop, his hardware remained fairly constant. He was a 486 dx2/50 with 12M of RAM and a 340M hard drive. He had a 640x480 LCD display which couldn't be more than 10" diagonal, a keyboard laid out the way laptop keyboards should be laid out, and a great little trackball on the right side of the screen panel with the buttons on the back. His battery unfortunately died, and the contacts in his battery compartment weren't so great anyway, so he became more of a luggable than a laptop. He had a 10Mbit PCMCIA Ethernet card. (The one physical component he gave to Robert Jr.) Robert ran Windows 95. I used him mostly to ssh into my other computers, Ragnar and Laura.

See Robert for information about Robert Sr.'s successors.
